When a hurricane is on the horizon, preparation can make all the difference. Taking action before the storm hits helps protect your property, ensures your safety, and gives you peace of mind. Whether you're facing a hurricane warning or just want to be ready for storm season, follow these 10 key steps to stay one step ahead of disaster.

1. Create a Family Emergency Plan

Sit down with your household and decide how you’ll stay in contact and where you’ll meet if separated. Designate an out-of-town contact and be sure to include your pets in the evacuation plan. If local officials order an evacuation, follow their guidance and turn off all utilities before leaving.

2. Secure Outdoor Items

High winds can turn everyday objects into dangerous projectiles. Bring patio furniture, potted plants, toys, and bikes indoors. Trim large trees and shrubs to reduce the risk of falling limbs. Wrap and tie down any large outdoor decorations or sculptures.

3. Protect Windows and Doors

Install storm shutters or impact-resistant glass for long-term protection. For a last-minute solution, nail plywood over windows and doors. Don’t forget skylights—they’re especially vulnerable to wind damage.

4. Safeguard Art and Valuables

Wall hangings and artwork should be taken down or securely fastened. If you have valuable pieces, move them to an interior room, off the floor and away from windows. It’s also a good idea to take photos and document their condition before the storm.

5. Move Vehicles to Safety

Don’t leave your car exposed to falling trees or rising water. Move it to higher ground, or park it inside your garage, as close to the garage doors as possible. Never park under power lines or in flood-prone areas.

6. Power Up Everything

Fill your gas tank well before the storm hits—gas stations may be closed during and after a hurricane. Charge your phone, portable chargers, and test your backup generator if you have one. Keep extra fuel safely stored.

7. Unplug and Relocate Appliances

Protect appliances and electronics by unplugging them before the storm. Move smaller devices away from windows and into cabinets or closets, ideally above floor level in case of flooding.

8. Store Critical Documents Securely

Place legal documents, insurance papers, IDs, and valuables in a waterproof container. A safety deposit box or bolted safe inside your home’s interior closet is ideal. Having these items accessible and protected can ease post-storm recovery.

9. Assemble an Emergency Kit

Stock up on essentials: flashlights, batteries, a battery-powered radio, bottled water, non-perishable food, extra clothing, blankets, medications, toiletries, and cash. Prepare enough supplies to last at least 72 hours for each household member.

10. Designate a Shelter Room

Choose a small, windowless interior room on the lowest level of your home—like a closet, bathroom, or hallway—to wait out the storm. Avoid all doors and windows until authorities confirm it’s safe to emerge.
